Do you want to learn to take radiographs safely, competently and confidently within dental practices?
Our Basic X-ray course provides you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to take X-rays on behalf of a dentist in accordance with current legislation and regulations.
This course has been developed for dental assistants and dental hygienists who take or wish to start taking X-rays on the instructions of a BIG-registered dentist. The theory covers intraoral, panoramic and CBCT images.
You complete the theory part entirely online. You carry out the practical part in your own workplace and have it signed off by the TMS at your practice.
Who is it for?
This course is suitable for you if you:
✔ Currently working as a dental assistant or dental hygienist and have not yet completed a basic course in radiography
✔ Want to know more about working safely with X-rays
✔ You need a certificate as proof of your training in taking X-rays
Both beginners and assistants with experience can participate.
Note! Do you already hold an X-ray certificate? If so, you are required to undertake refresher training once every five years. If you haven’t done so yet, please follow the refresher training in radiation protection for assistants and dental hygienists.

Dangers of
radiation
By the end of this module, you will have basic knowledge in radiobiology. To understand the effect of X-rays on a human cell, we first need to know how the cell functions. We also delve deeper into the topic of radiation and pregnancy.
What is radiation and how is it generated
In this section, we will look at the structure of matter and how X-rays are generated. We will cover the basics of atoms and molecules. We will use videos and plenty of images to present the material in a varied way.
Protection against radiation
We know what radiation is and what effects it can have on the human body. But how do we protect ourselves from radiation in practice? We’ll look at protection for staff and patients. We’ll also discuss the benefits of a lead apron, the ALADAIP principle and how to apply this in practice.
Legislation radiation protection
In this module, we will cover the key legislation and regulations relating to radiation protection. We will discuss the Nuclear Energy Act and the Decree on Basic Safety Standards for Radiation Protection (Bbs), as well as the key points from the professional guideline.
Anatomy & terminology
In this module, we will cover the anatomy of the teeth and learn to identify the various structures on an X-ray.
Setting technique & Quiz
In this section, we will look at the techniques for taking intraoral and panoramic images. We will do this using clear images and sketches. We will also look at CBCT and the specific points to bear in mind when taking these images.
This is followed by a quiz covering the most common setting errors.
How does the course work?
Theory - fully online
You’ll have access to our online learning environment. This consists of video lessons, animations, quizzes and practical explanations.
You can study whenever it suits you.
Practice - in your own practice
You will practise using the equipment you use in your own practice. You will take the various X-rays produced within your practice, and the TMS in your practice will assess your practical skills.
Completion and certificate
Once you have completed the theory part, you will receive your certificate straight away. The certificate is valid only when accompanied by the practical skills checklist, which must be fully completed and signed by the TMS.
You must undertake refresher training after 5 years.

Study load theory: 1,5 – 2 hours
Once you have completed the theory part, you will receive your certificate. The certificate is valid in conjunction with the fully completed form, signed by TMS Practical Skills Sign-off List.
