Advanced training in radiation protection for dentists - Online E-learning
With the retraining TMS Dentistry Basic you will be complying with the continuing professional development requirement for radiation protection set out in the applicable legislation and regulations (Bbs).
This X-ray refresher course offers a practical update of your knowledge and skills. You can complete the course entirely online via e-learning, at a time that suits you. This allows you to keep your knowledge up to date without having to attend a full-day course on site. The refresher course has a study load of approximately 4 hours.
This refresher course is intended for dentists who already hold the TMS Basic Dentistry certificate (formerly 5A/M) and wish to update their knowledge.
Radiation protection refresher course – TMS basic dentistry
No on-site training days and no fiddling with diaries. You can complete our X-ray refresher course entirely online, at a time and place that suit you best. You can pause the course at any time and continue later.
The content of the refresher course is based on the requirements set out in the Basic Safety Standards Radiation Protection Decree (Bbs), the relevant ministerial regulations and the KNMT Practice Guideline on Radiology in Dental Practice.
Upon successful completion, you will have refreshed your knowledge of current radiation safety practices and regulations governing the use of X-rays. You will receive a certificate and 4 KRT points*. The certificate allows you to prove that you have completed the required refresher training.

The nature of X-ray
In this section, you will learn how matter is structured and how X-rays are generated. We will discuss the various parameters that influence X-ray imaging and how they affect the image. We will also cover the interaction of X-rays with matter and the ways in which you can protect yourself against X-rays.
The biological effects of
X-ray
In this module, you will learn to identify the structure and functions of the cell and to understand the basic principles of radiobiology. We will discuss the rationale behind dose limits and dose reference levels, as well as the factors that influence biological effects. Naturally, we will apply this knowledge to the field of dental radiology.
Legislation radiation protection
In this module, we cover national and international regulations and guidelines on radiation protection. We will discuss the Nuclear Energy Act and the Decree on Basic Safety Standards for Radiation Protection (Bbs), the structure of a radiation protection organisation, and when registration or a licence is required. We will also cover the practical guidelines and applicable field standards for dental practice.
Protective measures
How do you ensure that exposure to X-rays is kept as low as possible? We will discuss the ALARA principle, the inverse square law, filtration, personal protective equipment and other factors that influence the dose. In doing so, we consider the protection of both the patient and the dental practitioner. Practical and directly applicable in the dental practice.
Learning objectives for TMS Dentistry basics
Upon completion of this refresher course, the dentist will be able to:
✓ Explain the nature of X-rays and how they are produced;
✓ Identify the impact of various setting parameters on dose and image quality;
✓ Carry out a simple shielding calculation;
✓ Identify the relevant parameters for dosimetry and image quality in dental radiology;
✓ Explain the rationale behind dose limits and dose reference levels from a radiobiological perspective;
✓ Identify factors that influence the biological effects of X-rays;
✓ Identify the formal duties and responsibilities of the TMS and translate these into the practical organisation of the practice;
✓ Assess departmental protocols and other radiation-related matters against current legislation and regulations, and against practical guidelines;
✓ Identify any necessary changes to the RI&E and submit them to the SBD;
✓ Describe and apply ALARA measures for patients and staff within the practice.
