Dental assistants who take X-rays on the instructions of a dentist must have received demonstrable training in this area and must keep their knowledge and expertise up to date. According to the KNMT Clinical Guideline: Radiology in Dental Practice This requires further training and refresher courses every five years.

What does the online refresher course cover?
1 year’s access
All the modules in the refresher course are available in an online learning environment. Once you have purchased the course, you will have access to the course content for one year.
Quiz
You will complete the refresher course with a quiz. You must achieve a pass mark to successfully complete the refresher course.
Certificate

What will you learn on the refresher course?
What is radiation and how is it generated
You will learn how matter is structured and how X-rays are produced. The basic principles of atoms, molecules and X-rays are explained using videos and clear illustrations.
Dangers of radiation
You will gain an understanding of the biological effects of X-rays. We will cover the basics of radiobiology, quantities and units in radiation protection, and look at radiation and pregnancy.
Protection against radiation
How do you protect yourself and the patient from X-ray radiation? We will discuss, amongst other things, the ALARA principle, distance, shielding and personal protective equipment, and apply these concepts in practice.
Legislation radiation protection
We cover the key legislation and regulations relating to radiation protection. This includes, amongst other things, the Nuclear Energy Act, the Decree on Basic Safety Standards for Radiation Protection (Bbs) and the relevant professional guidelines.
Setting technique & Quiz
You will refresh your knowledge of intraoral and panoramic X-rays using clear images and diagrams. We will also cover the theoretical basis of CBCT and the key points to bear in mind. You will then test your knowledge with a quiz covering, amongst other things, common setup errors.
